How To Create A Custom White Board

A while ago I ran across this post on Facebook… can’t remember who posted it but I thought it was cool so I saved it on my hard drive. :)

If you’ve watched any marketing videos lately you know the gurus like to write stuff out on a huge white board. And if you’ve actually checked into buying a white board of any size you’ve probably seen how insanely pricey it can be to buy one at the local office supply store.

The cool thing is that you can actually make one on your own for less than $30.00… and even I (who happen to have ten thumbs when it comes to this sort of thing) can put one together pretty easily with some supplies that can be had at the local Home Depot (or any decent hardware / lumber store).

So, here are the quick-and-dirty instructions:

1. Locate the “shower board” (just ask one of the employees where they keep them). A shower board is a big white sheet that will act as the actual “white board” that you’re going to draw/write on. Just beware… it’s big and awkwardly flimsy.

2. Next, find a piece of 1/4″ plywood to match the shower board. No need for an expensive piece, just make sure it lays relatively flat since this will be the “backing” to your white board (to make your shower board / white board stiff).

3. Find some Liquid Nails™ (it’s a type of construction adhesive). And a caulking gun to dispense the adhesive (it’s really cheap).

4. Go home, clear a space and put your new showerboard face down on the floor.

5. Apply a generous amount of adhesive (Liquid Nails™)  all over the back of the showerboard. Make sure you don’t apply it too close to the edges as it will spread out over the edges when you apply the plywood (just make sure its close enough to the edge so it doesn’t lift up around the edges).

6. Put the plywood down on top of the showerboard. You’ll have some time to adjust and line it up properly since the adhesive isn’t an instant-set adhesive. Make sure the corners match up well (since you won’t have a chance to trim it).

7. Stack tons of heavy stuff on top of the plywood to ensure proper bonding between the showerboard and the plywood. You can use books, weights or whatever… but make sure you leave it like this overnight.

8. It’s finished! You can now install it wherever you want. :)

How well does this erase when compared to a regular whiteboard?

Awesome solution to a simple problem.

I’m settling into a new home office and am planning to put in a BAW (Big A*** Whiteboard) on the wall across from my computer desk. I’ve been looking at adhesive films and paints – but these are either really expensive or the customer reviews say they just don’t work as advertised.

I’ve seen people use large windows as dry-erase surfaces, but didn’t make the logical leap to check out other materials at the good-old home center.

Thanks for getting my mind outside the box on this one!

      Hey Andrew,

      You’re welcome.

I almost freaked out at some of the prices for the full sized white boards. They’re insane.
I thought about wall papering the walls, but honestly I haven’t wanted to (because I’ll be moving in the next year). So, this solution worked out pretty well.

This is awesome! I had looked into both the “real deal” and the cheap knockoff stuff on Amazon. This looks like a great solution and a great way to get organized… like Frank :)

BTW, it’s great to get an email from someone that isn’t pushing a WSO. You got my attention and thanks!

      Thank Bret.
Yeah, I thought it was a great solution as well. I hope you get your white board up too!

I don’t even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was great. I do not know who you are but definitely you are going to a famous blogger if you aren’t already ;) Cheers!
