How To Guarantee Profitable Niche Blogging Results

This short report was created to explain how I guarantee success when I build my micro niche sites for organic traffic. You may not like what you will hear, but this is how I guarantee that nearly ALL of my niche blogs succeed in making money.

I think you may agree that a lot of people find keyword research tedious and challenging, and instead of testing a niche to see if it is truly a viable often resort to pure “guesswork” based on some numbers spewed out by various search tools.

You may be familiar with the following screenshot:

If you’re not familiar, the screenshot is from Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

A lot of peeps would completely dismiss the type of keyword result you see above (that’s circled in red),  simply because they almost exclusively look at the “Monthly Search Volume” and the “CPC” figures. As you can see they are both very low (a lot lower than what most ‘gurus’ will tell you to spend time on).

While skipping these may seem like a good idea, these figures do not tell the whole story. And I can tell you that if you were to NOT choose this keyword phrase you would most likely be losing out on hundreds of dollars per year (probably over 4 figures) from one single micro niche site.

How do I know this?

Because of 4 simple reasons:

1. I’ve spied on the competition to ensure profitability.

2. Checked with eBay to ensure people are selling and bidding on the product in question by following step 2 of this article about how to find profitable products on eBay.

3. I double-checked commercial viability of the product by using one of my favorite tools, the “Hot Item Finder”, to make sure people were actually BUYING the product.

The process is quite simple, you just enter your chosen keyword phrase and run the software (you can actually do all of it manually, but Hot Item Finder automates a lot of the process.

It goes and fetches the data from eBay and tells me some basic information based on criteria I set. So, the results would look like this:

Here are the criteria I was looking for in this search:

-      Must be completed listings

-      Must have sold (not just ended without a sale)

-      Must have minimum of 5 bids on the item.

You can see from this screenshot that just in the last couple of days there were a dozen or more products sold that included this keyword (that had more than 5 bids when sold).

4. Most importantly, I ran a PPC campaign for this and related keywords to see traffic volume and conversions.

Most micro niche bloggers will never do this, simply because they don’t have the resources to test niches in this manner (it’s cost prohibitive).

However, over the past couple of years I did exactly that in order to almost completely eliminate the chances of hitting a “dud”. Seriously, I ended up testing over 200 niches consisting of thousands of keywords to ensure profitability.

Here’s a screenshot from one of my MSN AdCenter accounts (that shows my testing activity over the past year):

(I only started using MSN AdCenter in October of 2010… prior to this I tested sites using the Yahoo Paid Network – YPN and MSN merged the same month)

When testing these sites, I used two different types of sites.

The first was a simple WordPress type of site monetized with AdSense, along with Amazon or eBay. I generally built these blogs using Autoblogging tools for content and/or PLR content, since I didn’t want to write a lot for each of these sites (the idea is to build these quickly and test the niche / keyword).

I used a simple theme called the “Blogging Success” theme by iThemes (they don’t sell it anymore, but you can just as easily use any 2-column theme with a customizable header).

The other type of site I built was by using a script that allowed me to dynamically create simple landing pages on the fly (based on keywords that were fed into it) called LP Gen (maybe some of you have heard of it). It’s a bit on the expensive side, but it was perfect for what I had in mind. These sites were also monetized with eBay or Amazon (and AdSense).

In any event, if the sites didn’t at least break even from my PPC campaign after a pre-determined number of clicks, I would simply move on to the next niche.

Curious as to what one of these sites look like?

Below you’ll see a screenshot of one of the sites I built (they looked nearly identical when built with WordPress as well as LP Gen).

This particular site was monetized with eBay, but I could have just as easily used Amazon – the AdSense block was cutoff on this one, but it’s actually towards the bottom of the page:

So, why am I telling you all of this?

Well for 2 reasons…

One, to impress upon you that Google Adwords Keyword tool or any other tool relying on input from Google alone (like Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder, Traffic Travis etc.) do NOT tell the whole story.

And two, because for many niche marketers, spending the time to actually test niches at this level is cost prohibitive, and I want to help you sift through a lot of the crud that’s out there.

So, I’ve made the decision to release a new set of reports with a list of my PROVEN niches, where I actually spent the $$$ on testing keywords with PPC then turning those keywords into organic niche sites.

While we’re at it, here’s a screenshot from one of my affiliate accounts where I earned nearly all of the profits this past year from the testing I did over the previous 2 years:

You can see a clearer image of this at http://micronicheblogs.com/

These reports are the result of many hours of research and testing; and as you can see in the screenshot earlier, thousands of dollars in testing.

Why am I practically “giving it away”?

I chose to distribute this hard-earned information to help you cut down the time you spend on market research, and open your eyes to dozens of viable niche markets that you may have missed or glossed over because of the numbers your favorite search tool brought you.

Too often do we rely on tools and not enough on testing… and more often than not, people tend to go into niches such as weight loss, fitness, dog training and wondering why they aren’t seeing any results.

With these reports, you will no longer have to guess whether or not it will be profitable, since the niche has been thoroughly tested via PPC and organic search numbers. So, achieving good results are very possible provided you follow a good plan of action and put in some elbow grease.

In each of these reports I will provide:

  • My Personal PPC Keyword List - A list of exact keywords I bid on via PPC for the niche.
  • Google External Keyword Tool Keyword List - for the primary keyword phrase (in exact match) for you to get additional ideas from. This list will come in an accompanying CSV file.
  • Trending data for primary keyword phrase (from Google Insight)
  • Fact list on the niche: background info, affiliate programs, popular brands (if applicable) etc.
  • Hot Item Finder Completed Sale Report from Ebay, which will show you each of the products sold over the past 2 – 4 weeks. This list will be delivered in an accompanying CSV file.
  • Hot Item Finder “Word Count” Report which will show you how many occurrences there are of any given keyword from the complete sale report (from the completed sales list in #5). This is useful data to help you create other variations of keywords for your niche sites. This list will be delivered in an accompanying CSV file.
  • LSI Keyword List from the Top 10 sites in Google for the primary keyword phrase (this is super useful when building your site). This list will be delivered in an accompanying Excel file (.xls file).

These are pretty unique reports and it will be limited… If you are on my customer list (or a subscriber of this newsletter), you will be informed when it’s available.

I will provide more details regarding these reports and the availability of them later this week.

can we use ppc and drive traffic to niche sites?do you show us?

    • Steven

      Yes, you can.

I’ve been doing it for a few years now. I do not show how in any of my products… there are products like Pay Per Click Formula out there that will teach you how to maximize PPC profits.

Steve, just bought your niche report, which is looking good!

With the information in the report, taking one of the niches, would you recommend building a site focusing on just the researched product/brand?

    Cheers

    • Steven

You could build a micro niche blog specifically around the product(s) the reports focused on.
The way I build many of my sites is to broaden the scope slightly, do a bit more research and add some more content around synonymous products (or topics) as part of the new site.

You would do that by cross referencing the keyword lists (between eBay, LSI and Google Keyword lists) and see what other synonymous keywords appear that you could include into your site. You could of course do more research and dig up even more keywords…

As I am intending to set up a few micro niche blogs next year I am interested to know if there is any update on the release of these reports ?

  • Mark

Thanks for this post, Steven. You sometimes test by sending MSN traffic to a page monetized with Adsense. Is sending paid traffic OK vis-a-vis the Adsense terms of service? Do you ever do that as a traffic/monetization model? I know that such arbitrage had it its brief shining moment in the sun several years ago, but I’ve heard that in the right circumstances it has again become a viable model.

    • Steven

      Hi Mark,

Arbitrage is frowned upon by AdSense and will most likely get your account shut down.
However, I have personally never had issues with Adsense on sites like the example I show in this blog post. In other words, sites where AdSense is NOT the primary reason why the site exists.

Since these sites were built to test conversions on Amazon / eBay (which is a lot harder to convert than Adsense) Adsense clicks were simply just a “bonus” on the site and helped me recoup some of the ad spend.

      Hope this makes sense.

      All the best,
      Steven

    Hey Steven,

Are you saying all your PPC tests were positive after your initial keyword research using the google adwords tool? Or which tool are you using?

    • Steven

No. Not all of my PPC tests were positive (I wish). The success rate of my PPC tests vary a lot, but I almost always use eBay as an indicator before sending traffic using PPC (as I mention in this post).

I use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and eBay (or Hot Item Finder, which digs into eBay’s data). That along with Google / Yahoo Search (to spy on competition) and Google Insights for search is enough for me to pretty much figure out whether something is worthwhile pursuing to the next stage (of sending traffic via PPC).

The only time I really use fancy keyword tools like Market Samurai is when I start doing research for larger “macro” type of blogs.
