What is a High Quality Site?

I’ve written quite a bit about content curation (and of course micro blogging) in the past, but I thought I’d share with you some resources I found that may help you in the quest of finding out what a HIGH QUALITY SITE really is…

… and how all of this is current affecting search results.

The first thing I wanted to share is a simply what Google think constitutes a quality site (as it pertains to the Panda update earlier this year):

Source: Google Webmaster Central

Early November (2011) Google made another update to their algorithm that impacted up to 35% of the searches out there… an update that deals specifically with the freshness of your content (they call this last update the “freshness update”).

Obviously it was bound to happen… think about it:

Source: Google Webmaster Central

Makes total sense, doesn’t it?

I also ran across the following video last week about how this update will affect search by the cats over at SEOMOZ (it’s pretty short, so it’s worth watching):

Wistia

So I guess the question we all need to ask ourselves is:

“Does my content matter?”

Is it a site that people would share with others or even bookmark? Or is it just “taking up space” in the search engines?

Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about developing sites in a different way?

And by the way, if you think that you can simply scrape content from another source and simply post it verbatim… not so much. There is a duplicate content filter, even for syndication…

So the answer is to curate your own posts and start adding value and make your content matter.

PS – I found this super thorough article on duplicate content “post-Panda update” that you may want to check out.

Hey Steven thanks for posting the the webmaster central checklist as I haven’t seen it before and some of the questions are obvious. On the other hand some are interesting views that I haven’t thought about. Also the SEOMOZ vid was cool and shared some cool insights.

-Mark, to quote last part of your post “effort to drive the “little guy” off the Internet, so the corporations can have it all to themselves.”

This isn’t true. I used to sell on eBay and as the site evolved it seemed that way too. Truth is changes were made to weed out the garbage sellers that created nightmare buyer stories. The bottom line is huge corporations have a lot more dollars to throw at ebay, google etc. so of course they’re going to sway things in that way as they are far more trustworthy to the consumer/end user. We won’t get into the top level execs and all that LOL.

This whole post as well as your comment made me really think and even though the big corps are more “trustworthy”, the “little guy” can add a lot of value as well. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like an underdog who does everything he can to help others. Are there still little guys selling on ebay and doiing well? Yes. Are there still sites by the little guy still ranking well? Yes. Are the crap MFA and micro niche just to rank well still ranking well? No, for the most part. Some are still ranking but most got slapped down.

Basically if you have junk sites just made to be set it and forget it they’re cracking down on that. There are “pro-bloggers” who are still doing well by search rankings as well as incorporating social media, having regular repeat visitors etc. I think that’s the way this whole Panda and Freshness updates are geared towards. So instead of making 100 crap sites, why not just have a few that you update regularly on a topic you are knowledgeable of (Steven-Martial Arts and his product he gave away in WF Warroom about 2 years ago used that as example) and update regularly.

For me this is exciting. I was bummed out when I found out affiliate marketing was this cookie cutter crap that worked 2 years ago. I have a few new sites/blogs I’m focusing on in a niche I know and can provide 1st hand experience. I have a few older sites still doing well and plenty of domains that did nothing or very little that I let expire.

All in all, use the old cliche of pick a passionate niche & update it regularly w/ unique content.

This is really an eye opener to all marketer. The old ways of duplicate content is over.
Mr. G is always ahead of us big time. Now I make sure that all my contents are unique and added
value to the reader. I only do adsense nothing else and I uplauded G for doing this. Now its quality against quantity.

    Nice post Steven.

Good information – thanks! It always seemed to me that so many of the gurus were pushing quantity over quality because it’s easy to create a tool or system that can pump out a lot of content in a short time, which made it seem to buyers of those IM tools/systems that they were actually doing a lot. Looks to me like internet marketers are going to have to go at it much more slowly and deliberately than before. I know you don’t teach the fast and loose way, which is why I’m on your list and have bought your products. However, I think IMers are going to have to go beyond what they get in any specific course, just to set their efforts apart from others who have taken the course. 2011 was a hoot (a Googlehoot?), and hopefully 2012 will be more relaxed. However, the little negative voice whispering in my ear wonders if this is simply the next step in an effort to drive the “little guy” off the Internet, so the corporations can have it all to themselves.

I love these changes that google make.it ensures that the web remains relevant!
I checked out some mind boggling statistics the other day about the volume of daily new content and new blogs/ sites / pages etc. Its no wonder google needs to prioritize!. Everyone is blogging nowadays! In my opinion people underestimate the need for unique AND quality content today. (myself included!!! but I am working on that! lol)
    Nice post. thanks

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for the ‘quality Site’ list. I’ve printed it off to remind me to check all of the factors when posting.

    Regards,

    Dave
