I’ve written quite a bit about content curation (and of course micro blogging) in the past, but I thought I’d share with you some resources I found that may help you in the quest of finding out what a HIGH QUALITY SITE really is…
… and how all of this is current affecting search results.
The first thing I wanted to share is a simply what Google think constitutes a quality site (as it pertains to the Panda update earlier this year):
Source: Google Webmaster Central
Early November (2011) Google made another update to their algorithm that impacted up to 35% of the searches out there… an update that deals specifically with the freshness of your content (they call this last update the “freshness update”).
Obviously it was bound to happen… think about it:
Source: Google Webmaster Central
Makes total sense, doesn’t it?
I also ran across the following video last week about how this update will affect search by the cats over at SEOMOZ (it’s pretty short, so it’s worth watching):
So I guess the question we all need to ask ourselves is:
“Does my content matter?”
Is it a site that people would share with others or even bookmark? Or is it just “taking up space” in the search engines?
Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about developing sites in a different way?
And by the way, if you think that you can simply scrape content from another source and simply post it verbatim… not so much. There is a duplicate content filter, even for syndication…
So the answer is to curate your own posts and start adding value and make your content matter.
PS – I found this super thorough article on duplicate content “post-Panda update” that you may want to check out.
