News Around The Web – Week of October 10, 2011

Some interesting happenings on the interwebs this week:

Bummer for iCloud… (sort of)

Box.net, an online file sharing service similar to Dropbox just announced that they are giving away 50GB of cloud storage for LIFE to anyone who downloads their app via the iOS app store. The “catch” is simply that you download their free app on your iPhone or iPad… pretty cool offer. This offer expires on December 4th, 2010. Thanks to CRN.com for making me aware of it. :)

Got Silk?

Speaking of Cloud Based stuff… Amazon has made a lot of buzz with their “new” Amazon Silk web browser (comes with the Kindle Fire). It’s a cloud accelerated web browser that is actually pretty cool, but maybe not as “revolutionary” as they might think, considering Opera has been doing this for a while. :)

But check out the video about it anyway!

While this technology is pretty cool, there are some security / privacy issues according to Naked Security.

Google is doing some Fall Cleaning

I just found out that both Google Labs and Google Buzz is going away (finally… particularly for the latter). Here’s Google’s post about it: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/fall-sweep.html

Apple iOS 5

Not really Internet Marketing related, but Apple started shipping the iPhone 4s today… AND the iOS 5 is also now available to download from iTunes.

According to Apple, there are over 200 new improvements to iOS 5, but the most exciting thing to me is their new iCloud feature and the notification center. Check out all the new features of iOS 5 here.

I also found a pretty cool article on Wired about 7 “hidden” features of the iOS5 as well.

Still using Meta Keywords?

Do you still use Meta Keywords? As you know, Google stopped using it eons ago, but Bing still uses it as one of the signals for ranking as well as a way to spot “spammers” says Duane Forrester, senior product manager for Bing webmaster outreach in this thread (over at WebmasterWorld.com – see post# 4344537, Duane is “BingDude” on this forum).
