Stop Sabotaging Yourself – Meet the “Resistance”

I’m a big fan of Seth Godin… and have read most (if not all) of his books.

I encountered  a video a while back of Seth asking the question:

…why do we sabotage our work so often?

In the video he discussed a term called the “Lizard Brain” the primal desires of man and animals (incidentally, this is also a term that I use when teaching martial arts as well to describe the same thing – except we use it in a different way).

Seth explains that the reason we sabotage our work is because of this “Lizard Brain”.

The lizard brain feeds on the “resistance” (a term coined by Steven Pressfield), and the “resistance” grows stronger the closer you get to completion of your said goal.

So, what is the resistance?

Resistance = Your “Valid” Excuses

(Excuses like: I don’t know enough; Other people are already doing it, so there’s no way I can catch up; I just need to make one more change to make it perfect; I’m not feeling good… and the list goes on)

Seriously, I don’t know about you but I have dozens of unfinished projects that were near completion but never launched because of the “resistance”…

So what is Seth’s solution?

It’s simple… it’s simply to finish (or to “ship” as Seth says in this video).

These are his words: “What you do for a living is not be creative (everyone is creative). What you do is SHIP”.

And he argues that what you need to do is to “quiet your lizard brain” in order to avoid sabotaging your project just before it’s ready to launch / ship / publish.

Anyway, it’s an interesting video, and you can view it below. He also talks about the principle of “thrashing early”, which is something that I have taken to heart in my own businesses.

So what’s my “take away” from this video?

It’s simply to “thrash early”, push through the resistance and “finish every project that you start”.

And to “keep shipping”
