With the passing of Steve Jobs last week, it got me thinking about all of the valuable lessons that Apple (and Steve Jobs) has given us in the area of marketing.
A couple of years ago I ran across a short little free eBook by Steve Chazin called “Marketing Apple”.
In this book, Steve discusses five areas where Apple excelled in their marketing.
Here are some of the “take aways” I got out of this ebook:
- Create a tribe – Help people feel that their purchase buys them access to a very special group.
- It’s about the benefits – Focus on what a product will do for your customer, not what it does. (this should sound familiar if you’ve studied basic copywriting)
- Conventional wisdom is WRONG – don’t invent anything new, improve on existing “technology”. Or as Apple says: “Never be First to Market. Make something good greater!” (I talk about this in the “Immediate Cash Blueprint“ as well, where you should focus your efforts in niches that already are making money).
- Make your message memorable and easily repeatable! You want to equip people with the right words, so THEY can spread your message. Marketing isn’t about what you say! it’s what others say FOR YOU.
- Clarity – Create a tight message that can help your customers reach the rest. Remember Apple’s messages for their products: Mac was “The Computer for the Rest of Us.” iPod was “1,000 Songs in Your Pocket. “ iMac was “3 Steps to the Internet.”
While doing a bit of “research” on Steve Jobs over the weekend, I ran across this following presentation on “thinking different” as well (that I think you’ll enjoy):
Here are some of the things that I found interesting, apart from the little ‘commercial’ at the end:
- Marketing is about value (ok, so this isn’t anything new, but it’s still important to consider any time you create a product)
- What do you stand for? (what is your message?)
- What do you want “them” to know about you (your product / company)?
- People with passion can change the world for the better….
There are a lot of things to think about here… stuff that can be implemented into my own business.
As a niche blogger, who is starting to move from “micro niche blogs” to “macro blogs”… the value of these lessons are quite obvious. Particularly as it pertains to giving readers value, creating a ‘tribe’, letting people know what I stand for… (have a look at my opt-in page for SuperSimpleMarketing.com if you’re wondering what I stand for).
What are some of your “take aways” from these resources? And how can you apply it to your business?
