News Around The Web – Week of September 12, 2011

Here are some interesting tidbits I found around the web this week:

Changes to the Facebook Custom Page URLs

Some interesting changes to Facebook recently…

A new change this week deals with the “Custom Page URL” (the “vanity link”). In the past Facebook required you to get 25 “likes” on your page before you could assign a custom URL to the page, which meant that the page owner first had to endure a period of having a URL that included their page name and a string of numbers (an ugly link).

Anyway, Facebook has now abolished this requirement and any person who create a page can now assign a “vanity url” immediately upon page creation. You can assign your own page URL here: http://www.facebook.com/username/

Facebook Adds Subscribe Feature

The 2nd item regarding Facebook this week is the addition of the “subscribe” feature. This feature are specifically for user profiles, not pages and overcomes the 5000 friends limit Facebook imposes on user profiles (again, not pages).

By using the “Subscribe” feature, you can customize what type of information you want to receive from a person. You can also “subscribe” to a persons news feed without them having to confirm friendship (pretty cool option I think).

To take advantage of this new feature, you simply have to go to a persons user profile and hover over the “subscribe(d)” icon.

Did you lose “Page Rank”?

If your site has lost its page rank recently it could be one of the following reasons (according to the latest video by Google’s Matt Cutts):

  1. Improper Canonical URLs on your site (to learn more about canonical URLs, you can read this blog post by Matt Cutts)
  2. You lost a “high page rank” link (from another site)
  3. You’re selling text links on your site

Here’s the video (if you want to hear it straight from Google):

5 Models of Content Curation

Content Curation is a word that’s been bandied about quite a bit over the last couple of years. I ran into an interesting article a while back that talks about the “5 Models of Content Curation”, that you may find interesting here: http://www.rohitbhargava.com/2011/03/the-5-models-of-content-curation.html

Insider Tips from PayPal

I was reading the Warrior Forum recently and happened to stumble across a post by “warriorkay” about some tips he learned while at a meeting with PayPal (along with some tips if you use WarriorPlus or DigiResults for your marketing). It’s a long post but worth the read (I think): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/431948-just-came-physical-meeting-paypal-6-insider-tips-i-got-can-help-you-prevent-problems.html

Interesting comment about the drop in page rank. I have a website that until recently got great organic traffic. Good articles, nothing spamy… and wham it’s traffic dropped off a cliff. I have a privacy policy, etc… the only thing I can think of is the Canical URL and to add more articles – it has been 2 years.

Keep on posting great stuff Steven!

Are you having any issues getting a vanity url for your facebook pages? I was able to get names for 2 of mine – and for the rest “not eligible for a username at this time.”

Interesting. I got a couple yesterday and did not have any issues.

I’ll try getting a few more again a bit later today to see what happens. I’ll report back here after I’ve tested it. :)
