In my last post I talked about content multiplication and how you ought to create videos out of your blog posts and submit them to various video sharing sites.
But one thing I didn’t mention was the reason why you ought to do this.
So, today I decided to share with you the top 3 reasons why I think you need to seriously consider adding video marketing to your traffic portfolio:
1. Tons of traffic
In May of 2010, Youtube announced that it had surpassed the 2 BILLION views PER DAY mark… and is currently ranked #3 on Alexa after Google and Facebook!
So, there’s plenty of traffic to be had from this single source alone (YouTube).
There are several other decent players as well, like Dailymotion.com (ranked #97); Vimeo (ranked #124); Metacafe.com (#318); along with several others like Blip, Revver, Viddler and so on… and there’s software and websites, such as TubeMogul, HeySpread and Traffic Geyser, that can help you distribute your videos to many or all of these sites from one single dashboard (meaning you don’t have to log-in to each individual site to upload your video).
Note: HeySpread and Traffic Geyser are paid tools. TubeMogul is a free service (but has some limitations / restrictions).
Just know, that every single piece of content you share with these sites has the potential to give you traffic for the long term.
How do I know?
I have videos I posted 3 – 4 years ago that still get 30 – 50 unique views per day!
Here’s a screenhot of the stats (Youtube Insight) from one of my videos:
In the last 7 days I got 319 views for this video (that’s about 45 views a day), with a 3.5 year total of nearly 100,000 views. That’s not a ton, but how would you like to get a few dozen visitors to your blog every single day from just one of your videos…
By the way, the video is nothing fancy… it’s a simple presentation I recorded with Camtasia.
2. It’s Viral
The cool thing about video (if done right) is that it can go viral pretty quickly. Particularly in this day and age where people are sharing videos on Facebook and Twitter.
However, to do so you must understand your viewers…
What are people searching for?
What are people asking?
You can identify many of these types of topics by going to niche specific forums, EzineArticle.com (by searching for the most popular articles in any category) or sites like Yahoo Answers (by looking at the most popular questions / answers in various categories).
Another option is to type in certain phrases within your niche into Google Insights to see what some of the “breakout” phrases are.
And of course YouTube is a great resource for what is popular in your niche.
Once you’ve met the above criteria, you would want to preferably create a video that has at least one of the following components:
- How to type information (instructional, screen capture, demo video etc.)
- Curiosity
- Shock and/or Awe Effect
- Feel good factor (funny, cute, inspirational etc.)
3. Highly Targeted Traffic
People are searching on Youtube for videos every single day. So, make sure you use the appropriate and proper “tags” in your videos (these are you “keywords”).
Make sure you include your keywords in the title of the video, your tags and in your description of the video (as with regular search marketing, using long tail keywords is preferable). If done right, you can start ranking for various terms on the first page of Google (relatively easily).
Another good rule of thumb is to keep your videos short… for most videos under 90 seconds is good, unless it’s of the instructional variant… (the video I created for the stats I showed above was 10:00 minutes long).
So, how do you get traffic to your site from videos?
There are 3 primary ways:
1. Traffic from the video sharing sites.
2. Traffic from your video ranking in the search engines
3. Traffic from your blog post (where you shared your video)
In order for 1 & 2 to happen, you MUST make sure you have your blog URL in the description field of the video, AND have your URL promptly displayed in the beginning and at the end of the video (you may also want to display your URL during the entire length of video as well…)
For #3, you would require that you used proper on-page optimization of your blog post and potentially some additional off-page SEO (link building) to rank your page. If it is for a long tail keyword and your blog is mature, you may only require to post it to your blog (along with a short post of a couple of hundred words) and point an internal link to the post in question.
Hopefully you can see why you ought to consider creating videos for traffic, and the best thing is that you don’t have to be a video pro to get results…
